Using OSS Radeon driver on my 6 year old laptop's [AMD/ATI] RV635/M86 [Mobility Radeon HD 3670] I get around 35fps in the ship at 640x480, 800x600 and so on... in windowed and full screen. I get about 28fps while outside (with dust storm going on and other beasties about), also at different resoluti...

We keep more state information and we don't use any compression at the moment.

Good point, but having a pre-built dependency package would also benefit new developers. They wouldn't have to build everything themselves and we would standardize builds.
